About EatClean

EatClean is a free service that helps people make informed decisions about where they eat. We aggregate food hygiene inspection data from public health authorities and present it in an easy-to-understand format.

Our Mission

Every year, millions of people experience foodborne illness. Many of these cases could be prevented with better awareness of restaurant hygiene standards. Our mission is to make food safety information accessible and actionable for everyone.

Data Sources

All inspection data is sourced directly from official health authority inspection databases. We currently cover the following regions:

  • Metro Vancouver & Fraser Valley (Fraser Health)
  • Vancouver, Richmond, North Shore (Vancouver Coastal Health)
  • More regions coming soon...

We update our data regularly to ensure accuracy. However, there may be a delay between when an inspection occurs and when it appears in our system.

How Ratings Work

We analyze inspection reports to provide a color-coded status that's easy to understand at a glance:

Green - Good Standing: No critical violations in recent inspections
Yellow - Minor Issues: Some non-critical issues noted
Red - Critical Issues: Critical violations found or closure ordered
Grey - No Recent Data: No inspection within the past year

While we strive for accuracy, we recommend checking official health authority websites for the most up-to-date information. A good rating today doesn't guarantee future compliance, and a poor rating may have already been addressed.
